“Stonewall Uprising: 50 Years Later
Emerging challenges for LGBTQ communities around the world”

Guest Editors: Caterina Arcidiacono and Agostino Carbone

The year 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. For this occasion the Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology (JCASP) is delighted to invite authors to submit manuscripts for a special issue dedicated to the future of LGBTQ communities following half a century of the Liberation Movement (1969-2019). This special issue focuses on new frontiers and pressing challenges for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and non-binary individuals and communities worldwide.
In the last few decades, we have seen how the LGBTQ community has won a number of key victories, and rapidly gained new rights (e.g. cohabitation and parenthood). At the same time we are experiencing a fast transformation of our societies and the emergence of new sources of inequality and forms of dispossession such as nationalism, globalization, gentrification, forced migration, political radicalization, and neoliberalism. Such structural and cultural changes make it necessary to gain a better understanding of their impact on the living conditions and the inclusion of sexual and gender minority groups in local contexts as well as in the wider societies.
The purpose of this special issue is to examine the symbolic, cultural and performative aspects of gender issues in our communities; the dominant prejudices regarding the LGBTQ population; the role of repression in generating internalized homophobia, guilt, denial, isolation, social conflict and a fracture within the kinship and generations; and all the other pervasive manifestations of heterosexism and heteronormativity.
Areas of research and reflection of this special issue include: homoparenting; effects of the legitimisation of same-sex civil unions and marriage on collective levels of repression; conflict between groups leading to homo-transphobic urban violence and bullying; barriers to healthcare access; progressive social retreat from the square (agora) and geophysical places in the face of a massive retreat into virtual reality; political construction of sexual diversity; biopolitics; new forms of aggregation and exchange that convey the need for reciprocity and a sense of belonging; the role of associations and militant groups in promoting prevention and equity.
Original empirical manuscripts are welcome and may use qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-method approaches. Theoretical and review papers will also be considered. Papers using multiple levels of analysis (individual, societal, cultural, structural), interdisciplinary and innovative interpretative models are particularly encouraged.
