L’Université de Groningen propose un contrat doctoral dans le cadre d’un projet international intitulé “Scientific Personae in Cultural Encounters”, en coopération avec l’Université de Stockholm, l’Université de Leuven, et le Max Planck Institute pour l’histoire des sciences de Berlin. Le projet de thèse ainsi financé devra porter sur les voyages scientifiques dans le contexte de l’International Federation of University Women.

Organisation

The Faculty of Arts is a large, dynamic faculty in the heart of the city of Groningen. It has more than 5000 students and 700 staff members, who are working at the frontiers of knowledge every day. Job description

Specialty areas: Modern History, Science History, Gender History, Life Writing (auto/biography)

Applications are invited for one PhD position in the research project “Scientific Personae in Cultural Encounters” (SPICE), in collaboration with the Departments of History of Stockholm University, Leuven University and the MPIWG in Berlin. The PhD project focuses on the way in which the International Federation of University Women through its fellowship program and intense international exchange enabled (young) women researchers and university based scientists to develop scientific personae that helped them in their scientific career in a time when the research university developed in a reconstituted international field of force (1920-1940).

Applicants are encouraged to develop and submit their own description of the PhD project in no more than two-three pages (about 1000 words) based on the original research proposal (available via Prof. Mineke Bosch).

Qualifications

  • MA degree in History (specialization: modern History, Science history and/or Gender History)
  • a good knowledge of several languages, preferably Dutch, English and/or French and /or one or more Scandinavian languages
  • strong motivation to complete a PhD dissertation in 4 years
  • proactive attitude
  • ability to work independently whilst also a team player.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,083 (salary scale PhD students Dutch Universities) gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,664 gross per month in the final year, based on a fulltime position. The position requires residence in Groningen and must result in a PhD thesis within the 4-year contract period. The candidate will first be appointed for 18 months. After the first year, an assessment will take place about the candidate’s results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.

The appointment will be effective from 1 September 2014.

 

Affiliation

The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School for the Humanities, affiliated with the Center or Historical Studies (Themegroup III) in the Institute for the Study of Culture Groningen (ICOG), and based at the Department of History.

  • a motivation letter
  • a curriculum vitae (including date and place of birth, copies of MA degree and grades, also -if applicable- titles of own publications)
  • copy of passport
  • e-mail and postal addresses of two academic referees
  • description of own ideas on the PhD project of max. 2-3 pages (about 1000 words).
